A Brief History of Madison, NJ
The community can be traced back to 1747 when the Presbyterians of Anglo-American stock settled here. They migrated into the area from Elizabethtown, Long Island and Newark, looking for land, commercial opportunities and political autonomy.
By the early nineteenth century, French-speaking immigrants had founded a Catholic Church in Bottle Hill as well. A private academy, named the “Madison Academy” after fourth U.S. president James Madison, was also established to promote the education of the young men in the area. Locals eventually wanted to change the name of the community. A movement sought to rename it from Bottle Hill to “Madison” for both the former president and the academy. The renaming became successful by 1834.
The construction of the Morris and Essex Railroad proved to be momentous for the community as well. In 1837, a railroad station was opened in Madison, transforming Madison into a vibrant commuter suburb.
