Choosing the Right Window Size for Your Home

choosing window size

There are numerous factors to consider when determining the appropriate window size for a room. Two of the most important considerations are the materials to be used and the window style that will best complement the aesthetic of your home.

Here are some tips on choosing the right window size for your home.

What Window Size Do You Need?

Window replacement companies use a simple size notation in identifying the size required for a rough opening. A window’s size notation is simply the combination of width and height. The first two numbers indicate the width, and the next two represent the height. However, take note that the actual dimensions of the window are usually 1/2 inch less than the whole number identifier.

Double-Hung Window Sizes

Double-hung windows are the most common type of replacement window in the U.S. They come in a wide range of sizes to fit any rough opening. They are often found in bedrooms, kitchens, hallways, etc. The width of a double-hung window can be anywhere from 24 to 48 inches. Its height can range from 36 to 72 inches.

Picture Window Sizes

Picture windows add architectural interest and more natural light to a home. They don’t open, so they can be fashioned in any size. Depending on your needs, picture windows can be made in various sizes. Typically, they are two, three, four, six or eight feet wide and one to eight foot tall.

Sliding Window Sizes

These windows are generally wider than they are tall. Their standard widths are 36, 48, 60, 72 and 84 inches while their standard heights are 24, 36, 48 and 60 inches.
