What Is SHGC, and Why Should You Pay Attention to It?

September 6, 2021    Madison Door

Before replacing your old windows, there are many decisions that you need to make. From what style you want to get, down to the size and placement of your windows – these are all important things that need careful consideration. However, one crucial feature of any door or window that many homeowners often forget about is the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) rating. While it sounds very technical and seems like something best left to professional window replacement companies, it is actually quite simple. Here are the basics that you need to know.

What is SHGC?

SHGC represents the amount of solar radiation that is admitted, either directly or indirectly, through your doors, windows or skylights. The SHGC rating is represented by a number between 1 and 0. To put it simply, the closer the number is to zero, the less solar heat is admitted or absorbed and subsequently released into your home’s interior.

Why Is This Important?

As mentioned above, the lower the SHGC rating is, the better it is at repelling solar heat. This can either be a good or a bad thing depending on your climate. For example, if you live in an area with scorching hot summers, then most window installation companies will recommend that you get the lowest SHGC rating possible to prevent your home from overheating.

When shopping around for new windows, doors or skylights, always pay attention to the SHGC rating. SHGC ratings are usually documented on labels that are affixed to the products.

Whether you need beautiful new entry doors to boost the curb appeal of your house or you are interested in getting brand-new windows to improve your home’s energy efficiency, you can count on Madison Door.
