Is Window Condensation Normal?

You want your windows to last as long as possible, which is why it is imperative that you check them once in a while for any issues that might compromise their performance. If you notice them “sweating” or “fogging” up, you might think it is an indication of a more serious problem. Most of the time, however, it isn’t. Read on as we explain more here.

A Normal Occurrence

Condensation happens when moisture in the air builds up on a surface as water droplets. When it occurs on windows, it is a result of notable differences between the indoor and outdoor temperatures. The water droplets form on the glass and frames, preventing you from seeing what’s outside. Fortunately, this is not an uncommon sight. Once you notice condensation on your windows, you can just wipe the surfaces and let them dry.

A Sign of an Ongoing Problem

Although most instances of window condensation are normal, there can be times when it’s not. In such instances, it is an indication of an underlying problem. The water droplets don’t appear either on the exterior or interior of your windows; rather, they form between the window panes. The gap between the glazing often contains an inert gas that helps improve the window’s thermal performance. As soon as condensation appears on that part of your window, it only means that the surrounding seals have already failed. Consider having the whole window unit replaced because it is no longer capable of keeping your home comfortable enough.

Reducing Window Condensation

The good news is that there are things that you can do as a homeowner to minimize the occurrence of window condensation. Open your curtains and blinds, air out your home, or invest in a dehumidifier.  The easiest way, however, is to replace your windows with better, more energy-efficient replacement units. This is a more ideal solution if you are already dealing with moisture damage in your home due to excess condensation.
